Potatos_are_not_friends OP ,

People tell me I don’t have company loyalty.

But then I ask which companies have employee loyalty.

This guy gets it.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

He would have cheaped out with some no-name actors. He knows the kind of movies he makes.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Gaming on the PC around the 90s-2000s was pretty rough. I remember installing a game from a CD, typing the key on the back of the CD, and installation failed because I needed different sound drivers or something. I remember most games on my janky PC would be a gamble if it worked or not, even if it met minimum specs.

I remember still facing that issue in around 2010s even with Steam, and then seeing how slick installing apps were on the iPhone and it just "worked", and wishing PC games were as simple.

PC gaming is great now. It's been a long time coming.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

It's usually 10 mins to debug, and 3 hours explaining, categorizing, identifying the scope of it exists everywhere else...

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Bulky. It has so many features and many times, it's missing just one or two more things from being good enough. Its like Excel, where it tries to predict/outsmart the dev but all that does is annoy them.

I use jetbrain at work.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

They're only getting redditors comment data, not CoD multiplayer transcripts.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Firefox. Ad block. Even works on mobile.

It's so ridiculous we have to do this.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Cover/remove any brand name labels. Duct tape and spray paint are ugly. Use them.

I call it "uglifying". Maybe it's luck but I never had my ugly bike stolen. In a sea of attractive bikes, mine stands out like a eyesore. And I always imagine if some one did steal it, it'll be quick to recover.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Ive been switching to foldable bikes. When I worked in a office, they fit nearly next to my desk.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Im frequently been surprised by their choices for years, since at least 2005. Like some companies, you KNOW what they're like. They do consistent impressive work like FromSoft, Nintendo, Valve. Some companies do consistent work that can be hit/miss, like Capcom. And others just do consistent work that gets a lot of shitty management decisions, like Ubisoft.

Sega doesn't fit any of those buckets. No consistency except that they're not consistent. You don't know what a Sega title will bring. Like they rotate management every week.

Just how the f*CK did Nintendo developed tears of the kingdom?

There are so many things being tracked all the time in the game for puzzles and the power arm. Yet despites literally tracking sunshadows for some puzzle completion for example it runs almost smoothly with (in my 170h) no crashes. On a 6 yo portable console??...

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

MGS V's performance is a freaking work of art. It ran incredibly smoothly on my PC, and was gorgeous to boot. Then I loaded a few other games and had to turn down settings to hit 60fps.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

PR people? They're an unnecessary expense.

He literally cut twitter staff by 80%, twitter is on life support and running on fumes, has crazy technical issues and breaking features, and he refuses to invest in it.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I'm all for this!

This is sort of what the Google reports were trying to do as well, provide feedback on shitty websites to fix their BS for the users. Ignoring some of the google-preferred solutions, a lot of the reporting metrics is valid. Make your site accessible. Don't load your site with 2megs of JS. Make sure the page loads quickly.

Do you find open source games interesting/good thing as a gamer?

@games I am a game developer working on game called Mushy Score. I decided that my niche would be to create open source games. I think these could be helpful for developers or teachers to teach about games and how they are made. Most open source games are small game jam games, but there are few “real games” that are open source like 0 A.D. and Doom. As a non-developer do you think open source games could be good thing?

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I started building games thanks to open source.

It's why I open source all my demos.

So the least it can do is inspire future developers.

We already had Sonic with guns and Sonic kissing a human princess. Nothing will ruin my affection for the blue hedgehog.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

That's not the fault of the government. The fact that they were able to do this without disruption or people even recognizing is a pretty big win.

Potatos_are_not_friends , (edited )

Its from nypost, which is garbage

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I met my female friend like this.

I made small talk with a girl at a bar, because she was wearing a cool gaming earrings.

She saw my ring. I saw her ring. We both felt relief that it wasn't flirting and now she's a good family friend who comes by for dinner with her husband.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Five years ago, I would have said, "Nah, they can throw money at it and make it better. So we should stay."

But now, Google has a massive history of giving up and killing products. Devs and open source are making comparable alternatives. The general public is turning on even Google Search. And even my own job is considering Google alternatives.

The next five years are going to be anybody's game.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Google Maps has gotten worse and worse.

It's now actively bloating a map with random businesses, making it difficult to use. And worse, it's obscuring random businesses from search. I noticed it a while back if I googled "Chinese food", a few places aren't showing unless I zoom in really really close. And these are places with 100+ reviews.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Whenever I pull out the vacuum, I do a little 5 min routine where I warn them and do a little vacuum fake noise.

I think it works. My cats no longer have a lot of panic when I vacuum, and one even decides to get close to it now.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Can we get a tldr? Can't watch a video.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

That's amazing. I didn't know AI can do that. Going to start doing that from now on!

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

The shareholders at the local yacht club were really bummed out because many of them were saving really hard to add another ship to their collection, and some might even have to cancel a 2 week international vacation. Ive started a GoFundMe because no shareholder should feel so deprived of those basic needs.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I love it. Block the service.

It's like how in America, we managed to get significantly lower COVID infection rates because we refused to do testing, and then lied when people died from covid! Win-win!

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Well human doctors have a history of coming into the appointment, ignoring all the things I written and the nurse/assistant wrote, ask me to repeat everything, then cut me off every sentence to give me a answer.

Many are also old boomer doctors who were taught black people have higher pain tolerance, and other inaccuracies about non-caucasians. I have some friends who did drug tests before a casual visit because they "fit a profile".

you are a coworker and have a conflict with another coworker who accuses you of being lazy, even though you started to work earlier than him. Is it your job to solve this problem?

I'm literally not a manager, I'm the newest employee here and this other coworker sits and talks to a female coworker that likes the attention for the first 50 minutes after clocking in. They don't work and nobody seems to care. Infuriating as it is, I think this is not my problem to solve....

Potatos_are_not_friends , (edited )

Not your problem.

As a team lead, if someone came to me complaining about another team member, my first action to gather proof. That's easy since we use project management tools to track task completion.

If the coworker was right, i politely work with the new hire. New hires imo take 6 months before they can really perform. That's my job and responsibility to get them there, not anyone elses.

If the coworker was wrong, Id flag the person as a grade-A asshole who is drama and start preparing a file on them. Drama like this bad for morale, and it is not acceptable to get into other people's business and work. I have fired staff who seemed more interested in what others are doing versus their own work.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Random event that made me think of this post. Yesterday, the woman at my wife's job who was incredibly nitpicky about everything and when my wife was training, was stepping on her toes and telling my wife (a 10y professional) how "things were done" and tried to micromanage her, she has officially been fired.

Apparently this lady flipped out and openly expressed some qanon shit, scaring her coworkers, and they found a gun on her. They work at a hospital so...

Just wanted to share that lol

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Honestly most anime games were hot garbage. Kinda like games based on movies.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot was incredible though. And was really wishing it kicked off a revolution, but nope. One Piece pirate warrior series is only fun because it's just Dynasty Warriors with a anime reskinning.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Book of Demons was so good. Shame the roadmap the indie studio made couldn't be met. It was wildly ambitious.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Makes sense. No need to burn bridges or salt the wound.

Maybe Eidos would love to get another Deus ex out there but there's no publisher interest. Passionate game developers still need financial backing to pay rent and put food on the table.

And honestly silence is the best policy here. They probably want to stop him from fucking up before he ends up like voice actor who played Niko Bellick and say something that pisses off their parent publishers.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Been this way since windows XP. There's always been good folk who go out and provide tools to remove bloat.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Yeah, but you see... Doom was a rare unicorn. It came with refreshing ideas, looked visually attractive, played good, and was fun.

That's a tall ask from EA.

Potatos_are_not_friends OP ,

I'm okay with that. It's her money. But at least it's not funding a company actively trying to destroy unions.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

And that's why we can't wait for boomers to die.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I'm currently playing Elden Ring and it's so freaking massive. It's incredible what From soft choice to include. There's whole areas that are completely gated for a hard-to-find side quest, that you'll only discover if you happen to follow a guide.

Any other company would have chopped the content and put it in a DLC.

And here they're like, "We got more just wait."

New to Linux? Ubuntu Isn’t Your Only Option (www.howtogeek.com)

Ubuntu's popularity often makes it the default choice for new Linux users. But there are tons of other Linux operating systems that deserve your attention. As such, I've highlighted some Ubuntu alternatives so you can choose based on your needs and requirements—because conformity is boring.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

The problem with going for alternatives is support.

Imagine picking a random Linux flavor, then trying to figure out how to change settings, only to get either hundreds of different answers.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I know this is a long TL;DR, but it is an outrageously long article, especially considering its substance)

Sidenote: the Wait but Why guy writes extremely long-form content.

If you're looking for a quick opinion on something, it's not him. He goes on mega tangents. I find it entertaining personally.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

As a non-participating visitor of security forums (which bleed into malicious hackers), I am looking forward to the popcorn.

Right now, my job post bug bounties and hackers pen test and find vulnerabilities. And there's a LOT of money flowing around in that space - my company alone has paid out over 7-figures collectively. A company's reputation to honoring the agreement is also sacred. Because if we fail to pay or reject that this is a real vulnerability, our rep tanks and the next time there's a vulnerability, it won't be reported, but abused.

CUSG just signalled that they are pieces of shit to the hacker community. And I'm gonna bet they are going to get some serious shit now.

🍿

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Sounds like a "you" problem, banks.

Nobody told "you" to loan money to build unused offices.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Zhang resigned from Apple following a paternity leave and a trip to China, telling the iPhonemaker that he was going to work in the country for XPeng Motors. That reportedly triggered an investigation, since XPeng is also working on autonomous driving technology, which revealed that Zhang was caught on CCTV taking hardware from Apple's labs and transferring files to his wife's computer.

6 months is not long enough.

This is stealing trade secrets, then fleeing to a country that doesn't give a shit about that.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

I wish cloudpunk had optional fetch quests. I liked the narrative. I enjoyed the experience.

But the world is so big and I want to just mindlessly chill and be a taxi/delivery driver and watch a optional meaningless bar go up.

Potatos_are_not_friends OP ,

There was a similar comment about that. How they are in a sunk cost fallacy for all the GaaS promises they made a few years ago. And to not release it means they make zero.

Versus releasing and maybe they make some money back.

Hoping they could salvage something.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

You're right. Google employs over 140k people.

If the average team is 8-10 people, this article is kinda complaining about 10000+ people being shitty at their jobs.

When really, middle managers are also part of the same worker class.
