In particular: wind and solar weren't ready for this kind of deployment 50 years ago.

silence7 OP Mod ,

Those were solar hot water heating panels, not photovoltaics. Quite effective for what they did, but not something that could be used as a source of electricity.

It's not a huge change in unit design to be able to do that, but most AC units sold in the US have historically not had that capability built-in.

silence7 OP Mod ,

You could literally turn the unit around, but they're not designed for that. The controls would be outdoors instead of indoors.

What you're missing is that heat pumps move heat, instead of just turning electricity into heat. How efficient they are at this varies by heat pump, and by outside temperature. During extreme cold, you might really spend more, but the rest of the year, you end up moving 3-5 kwh of heat for each kwh you consume, so your overall bill over the course of a year ends up being lower.

Given the large number of gas export terminals already approved and under construction, I'm expecting US gas prices to at least double over the next few years, bringing them up to match the international LNG price.

How to influence the US election towards climate action

If you’re a US citizen, no matter where in the world, start by making sure you’re registered to vote. Many districts are gerrymandered, so you’ll want to register as the party that’s likely to win congressional and/or state legislative districts where you live, and vote in that party’s primary....

The maps don't really change much here; this is about emissions resulting from use of products. Eg: if you sell gas cars, you'd disclose an estimate of the lifetime emissions they create as people use them.

The history of meltdowns resulted in a whole lot of safety rules, which cost something to comply with. They also prevent meltdowns.

Any alien capable of spotting this would have long ago detected the high oxygen concentration in the earth's atmosphere and concluded that there is life here.

There are a lot more regular people than billionaires. If we work together, we can set policy and enact laws in much of the world. And that lets us control the behavior of the wealthiest.

silence7 OP Mod ,

We haven't won yet, but that doesn't mean we can't.

silence7 OP Mod ,

They're not up for election; Supreme Court justices have lifetime appointments. It's just part of their bigger agenda of ending the use of regulation in any way that benefits people instead of corporations.

Rich asshole: see, they keep eating beef. Why should I change.

Reality: we all do

silence7 OP Mod ,

No, they're ruminants, with similar methane-producing bacteria in their digestive systems.

What's important here is that the lower bills would have paid for the higher mortgage. But this wouldn't benefit the homebuilders, so they fought it
